Foods That Contain Cholesterol

Foods That Contain Cholesterol

Some foods do contain cholesterol, so it is important to keep track of the amount existing in every product you buy. Remember to always check the label for exactly how much cholesterol is in every food product. The cholesterol found in some foods is called dietary cholesterol. Some foods are higher than other foods in dietary cholesterol. Liver, prawns, kidneys and eggs tend to have a higher level of cholesterol than others. But, the cholesterol we get in our bodies from food has not as much effect as saturated fat has on our blood cholesterol levels.

Cholesterol

Saturated fat has a greater impact when it comes to increasing/decreasing those ugly LDL cholesterol levels. However, liver is a rich source of vitamin A which is known to be harmful in high amounts. It is highly forbidden for pregnant women to eat liver, and also for older people at risk of bone fracture. The body has a tendency to store vitamin A and levels can build up over many years, so it is recommended that people who already eat liver every week not to increase the number of meals.

Unless your GP or dietitian advises you to cut down on eggs, prawns or kidney if you are already on a balanced diet, you should keep eating them in your normal way. The most important thing to do if your GP has advised you to change your diet to reduce your blood cholesterol is to cut down on saturated fat. Another good idea in order to reduce your blood cholesterol is to increase the amount of fiber, fruit and vegetables you eat.

Cholesterol and fats

Mainly there are two known types of fats - saturated fats and unsaturated fats. Saturated fats are those that you should avoid as much as you can since those are the ones that tend to raise your blood cholesterol levels. Most people in the US eat too many foods that are high in saturated fat.

Foods that are high in saturated fat include: butter, ghee, hard cheese, cream, lard, meat pies, hard cheese, sausages, fatty cuts of meat, cakes and biscuits, oils such as coconut oil and palm oil.

While saturated fat increases your blood cholesterol numbers, unsaturated fat can actually reduce cholesterol levels. Try replacing foods containing saturated fats with foods that are high in unsaturated fats such as: avocados, seeds and nuts, oily fish, corn, olive, sunflower rapeseed oils and spreads and vegetable oils are also healthy choices.
